Taste Of Design – Web Series on Restaurant Design
“Some people ask the secret of our long marriage. We take time to go to a restaurant two times a week. A little candlelight, dinner, soft music, and dancing. She goes Tuesdays, I go Fridays.” – Henny Youngman
The first thing that most people talk about when discussing restaurants is quite naturally, the food, but a restaurant is so much more. It could be argued that there isn’t anywhere else that we seek and expect to find the same comfort, familiarity and relaxed joy that we experience in our own homes, while simultaneously existing as a destination and an escape from everything ordinary and familiar. A knife edged balancing act as tough as balancing acidity with sweetness.
Creative Director and Principal Designer, Amy Vail, was fortunate to be living in Portland in the early 2000s, when its now renowned food scene exploded. As a designer, she became fascinated by the different types of experiences being curated, and decided it was worth overcoming her own shyness about being on camera to celebrate and share some of the stories behind what makes a restaurant so much more than just a wonderful meal.
